Eid!

We’re all really excited about this weekend’s Eid events in Edinburgh and Glasgow. It’s a common complaint that not much happens around Eid, and so we’ve set these events up to allow people to come together and celebrate.

The events have got a great line up of entertainment:

  • Fursan are a world music group who have become one of the hottest acts on the scene after coming together earlier this year. Already they have toured across Europe, and supported Outlandish, who said of Fursan that they “have an organic vibe, reminds us of Arrested Development”. See this video for a taster.
  • Shaista Aziz has entered the comedy circuit with a bang this year, picking up the Manchester Comedy Store’s King Gong award. She was a finalist at the Liverpool Comedy Festival and was also at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe. She is fresh from performing in Hong Kong.
  • Milad Raza Qadri, one of Glasgow’s very own, wows audiences with his melodious voice and is considered to be Europe’s biggest selling nasheed artist. See his website for more.

We look forward to seeing you there. Click on the links below for full details.

Edinburgh – 19 November, St John’s, Princes Street

Glasgow – 20 November, Victoria Hall, 70 Coplaw Street, G42

Anniversary of Gaza bombings coincides with day Moses freed the Jews

Scots Muslims and Jews will come together this week in a show of unity to mark one year on since the Israeli bombardment of Gaza.

The 22-day bombing campaign named Operation Cast Lead which killed 1,400 Palestinians began on Dec 27th which this year coincides with the day of Ashura, when Muslims believe that Moses delivered the Israelites from Pharaoh in the famous incident when the sea parted.

Muslims normally mark the day by refraining from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset, and will be joined by members of the Jewish community in the act this year to draw attention to the situation in Gaza.

Poster-SpittinLight2The Spittin’ Light, Healing the Hood gigs in Glasgow and Edinburgh over the weekend were simply superb. Everyone had their own favourite lines, moments and artists e.g.:

  • Edinburgh… It’s special, it’s special, it’s special… SPECIAL! (Mecca 2 Medina)
  • You’re beautiful, you’re a star! (Poetic Pilgrimage)
  • Hallelujah, Alhamdulillah… Hallelujah (Amir Sulaiman)

Videos will be out soon. I’d like to give due props to our partners at Radical Middle Way, who we were very excited to be working with on this, and who we look forward to collaborating in future with too.

We had some murmurings of discontent before the events from some questioning the religious credentials of this event. Some even suggested that the realms of Islam and culture should be kept separate.

untitledToday saw the launch of Unity Family Services in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. It’s a new initiative aiming to tackle family breakdown within the Muslim community.

Its chairman is Sunday Times Rich List member and respected thinker Azeem Ibrahim. It’s on-the-ground operations though are led by Shaykh Amer Jamil who was born and brought up in Glasgow, but has spent the last decade studying Islamic sciences and jurisprudence in the Middle East, with a special interest in family law.

As far as we are concerned at SIF, we would support whatever he turned his hand to on his return to Scotland. We are crying out for more Islamic scholars with both a deep knowledge of their faith and of  society here. That he’s taking on such an important issue, makes our commitment even more imperative.

I had the great pleasure of attending and speaking at last night’s fundraiser for the new mosque in north-west Edinburgh.

An incredible figure of over £100,000 in pledges was reached on the night.

It’s been an extremely taxing couple of weeks at SIF HQ.

As well as the Scottish Muslim Futures conference, we took our friends from CAIR around the country in the days leading up to it – to Fife, Aberdeen and Dundee for some special events.
