I attended the unveiling of Show Racism the Red Card’s Islamophobia DVD in the Scottish Parliament yesterday.
The film itself is excellent. It really is a good watch. It features Thierry Henry striking up some typically chic gallic poses with genuinely insightful comments on the issue. Other footballers include Samuel Etoo, Rio Ferdinand, Didier Drogba and Kolo Toure. Alongside them are interviews with a variety of young Muslims who have been on the receiving end of Islamophobia.
In attendance at the event were the First Minister Alex Salmond, Labour leader Iain Gray, Lib Dem leader Tavish Scott and Jamie McGrigor from the Conservatives. Football figures like ex-Scotland boss Craig Brown, Tony Higgins, Jim Duffy and Jackie McNamara were also present.
What struck me looking round the room was that finally the issue of anti-Muslim hatred was being taken on by wider society rather than just being the preserve of Muslims.
So well done to SRTC for this initiative. I had the opportunity to advise on an early cut of the film in the summer. At the time, the Red Card team were already keen for the end result to be pushed into every school across Scotland. That’s why I put at the end of my comment in the press release for the event, that I hoped that would happen.
The First Minister had a wee surprise at the screening by announcing that the Scottish Government would be funding the distribution of it to schools across the country. Look out for it soon.
